What is a Cavapoo?
A Cavapoo is the love child of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle, usually a Miniature Poodle.
The American Kennel Club refers to Poodles as proud, active and very smart. A Cavalier is graceful, affectionate and gentle. Although my pup is a combination of these traits, genetics are impossible to predict—even for litters of purebred dogs.
How big is an adult Cavapoo?
The cavapoo’s parents are both small breeds. You can expect your adult cavapoo to weigh from 12-20 pounds and stand 10-15″ at the shoulder.
Are Cavapoos smart?
Vetstreet.com describes the Poodle as having an Einstein brain and Animal Planet ranks them #2 on their list of Top 10 Smartest Dogs. Although the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel doesn’t make the list, they are considered easy to train due to their desire to please. Our basic manners class just began so I’ll weigh in on this later.
Are Cavapoos a good family pet?
Yes! But Cavapoo puppies are small—mine weighed less than four pounds at seven weeks old—and it would be easy for a child to seriously harm one accidentally. I wouldn’t recommend them in a household with children younger than seven years old unless you’re willing to commit to direct supervision at all times.
One of the biggest dangers to the pup is stepping on his foot. He’ll follow you from room to room and do it so quietly you’ll forget he’s there. My vet warned that an injury of this kind would cost more than $1,000 to surgically repair. His suggestion to add a bell to my pup’s collar was a cheap solution.

Do Cavapoos shed?
The answer to this question will vary greatly depending on whether your Cavapoo’s coat is more curly (Poodle) or wavy (Cavalier). A Poodle’s coat is non-shedding, while a Cavalier is considered a moderate shedder. My Cavapoo, a pup who is definitely not Poodle-like, sheds so much that I purchase a refill for my lint roller every other week.
Are Cavapoos hypoallergenic?
No dog is 100% hypoallergenic, but breeds with non-shedding coats produce less dander (dead skin) and allergic reactions in humans. The American Kennel Club lists the Poodle as one of their top choices for allergy sufferers, so a half-Poodle puppy is also a good choice. If you’re concerned about allergies, consider buying an F1B Cavapoo puppy with a curly, Poodle-like coat.
What is an F1B Cavapoo?
If you breed a Cavapoo with a Poodle, the resulting pup is 75% poodle and known as an F1B Cavapoo. This dog will shed less and be more hypoallergenic than a regular Cavapoo.
How long will a Cavapoo live?
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a life expectancy of 10-12 years, while Miniature Poodles can live as long as 15 years. To increase your dog’s lifespan, buy from a reputable breeder to limit potential health problems and buy high quality food.
Do Cavapoos have any health problems?
The Cavalier is at risk for two serious health problems, mitral valve disease and a neurological condition called syringomyelia. The Poodle Club of America’s website features a description of the diseases that might affect Poodles, and it’s a long list. Some are common to all dogs and some are specific to Poodles.
Responsible breeders test their parent dogs for known genetic problems. Run away from any breeder who doesn’t offer a health guarantee on puppies or willingly provide information on the parent dogs. For more information, read So You Think You Want a Cavapoo?
How much does a Cavapoo cost?
The cost to purchase a puppy varies greatly depending on where you live. In the U.S., a typical price range is $1200-1800. In Australia, where the mix is extremely popular, residents often pay double the U.S. price. In the U.K., you can easily find a Cavapoo puppy for less than $1,000.
RaisingSpot.com suggests a dog that lives 12 years may cost you as much as $32,990 over his lifetime. And while that breaks down into an easier-to-budget $229 per month, that’s hardly a small amount. If you are one car repair or rent increase away from financial problems, now is not the time to get a dog. No matter how impatient you are, do not buy a dog from a pet store. Those puppies are typically purchased from puppy mills and you are asking for trouble if you buy one.
Should I Choose a Cavapoo or a Goldendoodle?
Goldendoodles—a Golden Retriever/Standard Poodle mix—was called America’s Dog by Life Magazine. Here’s why we think most people will prefer a Cavapoo.
